Coking Coal Price OutlookPrices for Australian coking coal increased over the past month. Prices averaged USD 509 per metric ton in May, which was up 6.8% from April's price and was 339.9% higher than in the same month last year. Meanwhile, on 31 May, coking coal traded at USD 475 per metric ton, which was 8.3% lower than on the same day of the previous month. The EU proposed a ban on Russian oil on 4 May and approved it on 31 May, with the bloc stating that it expects to consume more coal as a result. Demand was further supported by the boost to industrial activity in India coming from eased Covid-19 curbs. Meanwhile, supply prospects remained hampered by wet weather in Australia and Covid-19-related worker absenteeism. Prices were restrained by rising coal output and Covid-19 restrictions in China.
